Christmas? I know … you are reading this in February. But news travels slowly from this side of the world ☺.
Wow, this year was a Christmas like no other and one of very few that I haven’t spent surrounded by my awesome family. And though I couldn’t help but miss family, how could I be sad surrounded by beautiful children with no family but us to spend Christmas with?
The day started off with caregivers and children piling into the truck to drive to our Christmas Morning Worship Service. Upon arrival, we took some of the children aside, put them in costume, did a quick rehearsal and helped them to perform the Nativity story. They were amazing!
At about 2 pm, we re-gathered and gave thanks to Jesus for all He has given us. We then distributed the gifts and opened them together. The children had a bewildered look, not sure what to do with this brightly colored package. It took them a while to realize that there were good things inside. The M&M’s were a shock as they didn’t know whether to eat them or throw them. Little Obol, who very rarely smiles, was so happy with his little car.
After gifts, we played some good ol’-fashioned games: like water balloon toss, 3-legged race, blind man’s bluff, and the new one-handed banana eating contest. Children, teens and adults were full of smiles and laughter. We had so much fun!
Next we gave thanks and asked for a blessing as we shared Christmas dinner together. Each child got their very own bottle of soda. What a beautiful sight it was to see their happy faces enjoying the meal.
So, though my family and snow were missing, Christmas in Kitgum was full of love and joy. Hope yours was also.
